Happy Thursday! It's almost been 3 months since I started Dayoff!

But let me be real - no one is using it lol. I think I had an epiphany this morning too. I had been working on tweaking the automatic DM that gets sent out that introduces myself when a user signs up. I should just shut up. In fact, I don't want anyone to know who the creator of Dayoff is. This is not about me or my ego. It's about you. It's about letting people express themselves (on platforms not owned by billionaires).

So no more talk about Alex. If you show someone Dayoff and they register, they won't know who built it. And that's how a party should be. You don't show up at a party and the host is there at the door to greet you. (No cool party anyways ;)). You show up. There's already people dancing. And you work your way to the punch. That's what I need to focus on.

Some other changes on Dayoff:

There are beach balls now

You get them for posting (1 a day). Honestly I'm not sure what the value of a beach ball is yet. But they will mean something, so start collecting them. Also i'm working on this idea where you can throw a beach ball at someone. This is a work in progress.

Posts disappear after 24 hours.

I'm hoping this gets you to post. It'll be a fresh feed and you don't have to worry about something you said last week when it's not really relevant anymore. Dayoff is for in-the-moment connections. So yeah, post whatever. It'll disappear anyways. Also, if this works, we can start measuring success by beach balls.

You don't need an Intro to post anymore

I'm removing this because this was basically my first hard lesson in building a social app - don't make it harder for people to engage. Yes, I do want people to write an Intro, because it builds trust and intention. But also, do it if you want to.

Some other things on my mind

I've been writing on Substack about my thought process for building this, and why we should all ditch Meta because they literally profit off the destruction of our mental health. It is insane once you start diving into how powerful Meta has become and it's only gotten worse. We should be exploring multiple social platforms to create a better internet. The smaller the better, actually.

I'm starting a Meetup

Oh, almost forgot! I'm hosting a meetup to talk about our relationship to social media. I have no idea what to expect, and so far it seems pretty small. I'm limiting the first session to ages 25-45 just to test things out and if it's successful, I'll open it up to other age groups.

The first Meetup is in 2 weeks (Thursday, Aug 27 at 7PM EST).
